OUR PRODUCTS

Exclusive Thordon Bearings Distributor for Mid Atlantic Region

Thordon Bearings, a pioneer in the development of pollution free bearing designs, offers bearings that use water to lubricate the bearings in marine applications, where many other bearings still use oil and grease to lubricate the bearings, including rudder bearings, deck machinery bearings, and propeller shaft bearings for all water conditions. Thordon bearings reduce the environmental impact for users, allowing them to eliminate any risk of criminal, civil and administrative penalties and other adverse reactions such as bad public relations that may occur from oil or grease leaking into rivers, lakes or seas.

SXL

Thordon SXL offers a lower coefficient of friction for lower break-away torque and smoother operation at lower shaft speed, increased resistance to third particle abrasive wear, and longer wear life compared to XL. This is an excellent widely used material for rudder bearings and propeller shaft and stern tube bearings.

RIVERTOUGH

Thordon RiverTough bearings are specially formulated to provide longer wear life in highly abrasive and dirty water conditions, such as river boat propeller shafts and suction cutter head bearings on dredges.  RiverTough has proven to last at least twice as long as rubber bearings in extreme environments.

THOR-PLAS BLUE

ThorPlas-Blue is an engineered thermoplastic, for high pressure applications up to 45 MPa (6,527 psi).  It is capable of wet or dry operation and displays very low wear in non-abrasive environments.  This lifetime lubricated homogenous polymer never requires grease or oil lubrication. In addition to SXL rudder pintle, stock, and carrier disc bearings, SXL TRAXL or ThorPlas-Blue can be specified grease free in steering and linkage applications, as well as fin stabilizers. In workboat applications, ThorPlas-Blue is recommended for the more highly loaded bushings in the tiller arm and "jockey-bar" linkages as well as rudder bearing applications. Both products operate grease free saving you time, money and the risk of pollution.

XL

Our traditional propeller shaft bearing grade, Thordon XL is a general purpose bearing offering superior performance compared to many other bearings commonly used in propeller shaft applications.  XL provides long wear life, a low coefficient of friction, reasonable abrasion resistance, and cost effectiveness.

COMPAC

Thordon COMPAC is a high performance water lubricated bearing system primarily for “blue water” operating conditions.  Specially formulated with a low coefficient of friction to reduce startup friction and eliminate stick-slip, COMPAC is designed to promote early formation of a hydrodynamic film at lower shaft speeds.  The lower (loaded) portion of the bearing is smooth, while the upper half has water grooves to lubricate and cool the bearing.

THORSEAL RUDDER PUCKER SEALS

Thorseal rudder seals manufactured by Thordon Bearings Inc. are high performance, self lubricating lip seals designed to be mounted above the rudder bearing to prevent the ingress of sea water into the hull. Manufactured from a tough polymer, Thorseals provide long wear life with no need for periodic adjustments, resist tearing and extrusion and, as a result of builtin lubricants, operate with less drag and reduced cylinder wear. The Thorseal rudder seal can be easily fitted to rudder shaft diameters ranging from 200mm (8”) to 1500mm (60”) for both newbuild and replacing multiple lip fabric/rubber seals or conventional packing. Thorseals offer positive sealing over a pressure range of 0 to 100 MPa (15,000 psi). Thorseals are designed with an interference and diametrical shaft movement allowance so that the sealing performance is maintained under the normal operational life of the rudder bearing. Special designs are available for small rudderstocks or where space is restricted. Thorseal rudder seals can also be used with fin stabilizers.

THOR-PLAS BLUE SELF ALIGNING BEARING

With over 40,000 vessel years of experience over the past 35 years, a Thordon solution has been developed for the live end of a hydraulic steering system. The ThorPlas-Blue Self Aligning Bearing (SAB) solves the problem of less than desirable alignment tolerances in the hydraulic steering system design. As most bearings in the steering system are greased sleeve type bushings, there is no allowance for vertical movement of the tiller pins. The ThorPlas-Blue SAB allows the bearing to tolerate small angular misalignment resulting from deflection or improper mounting. However, misalignment is not the only stress input on this type of product: vibration, corrosion, and pollution are also very damaging factors to the steering system. The ThorPlas-Blue SAB can handle them all!

TG-100 SHAFT SEAL

The Thordon TG100 is a mechanical seal for 88mm (3.5”) to 305mm (12”) propeller shafts found in workboats, dredgers, tugs, yachts, patrol craft, and other coastal vessels operating in either clean or dirty, abrasive-laden water.

Manufactured for long wear life and reduced maintenance costs, TG100’s elastomeric bellows accept both axial and radial shaft movement and compensate for alignment issues.  Its unique emergency seal allows stand-alone operation to get you back to port safely, without damaging the seal.  The wedge “lock” design ensure the rotary face is perfectly square to the shaft.

SEATHIGOR SHAFT SEAL

The Thordon SeaThigor Seal is a mechanical face seal for 300mm (11.8") to 750mm (29.5") water lubricated propeller shafts found in yachts, cruise ships, merchant ships and naval vessels. The SeaThigor has evolved from a design first tested in 2003 and improved during the next decade. One of the unique aspects of the SeaThigor seal is that it has a safe return to port mode.  The faces that we use for this seal are silicon carbide.  If the silicon carbide faces ever get damaged, the safe return to port seal means that the shaft can still turn with the seal in place. It works by activating an inflatable seal and the vessel can proceed to a repair facility on its own power, at reduced speeds. The SeaThigor seal is designed for a maintenance free life meaning that it is able to provide no visible or minimum leakage, long life and high operational reliability. When operating in general duty service, our intention has been to design and manufacture a seal with an extended service life and our extensive testing has confirmed this.

WATER QUALITY PACKAGE

The Thordon Water Quality Package is designed to supply seawater to the propeller shaft bearings for lubrication and cooling at a minimum flow rate of 0.15 litre/minute/mm (1 US gallon/minute/inch) of shaft diameter and to condition the seawater by removing suspended solids larger than 100 microns (0.004” ) and with a specific gravity of 1.2 or higher; separation to 80 microns (0.003”) is achievable using the 75-150 l/min (20-40 GPM) unit.

A flow alarm is incorporated to alert the operator to any low water flow condition to the bearings. The Thordon Water Quality Package is designed to operate on a stand-alone basis, or can be fully integrated into the ship's control and monitoring systems to allow operation in an unmanned machinery space.

Thordon offers three Water Quality Packages in configurations designed to deliver flow to suit a wide range of shaft sizes, and provide an appropriate degree of redundancy for the vessel involved. Thordon can, if required, work with integrators, designers and  builders to meet special needs for specific installations.
